IT is not like a batsman only charges at a spinner with violent intentions. The step-out doesn’t always have to be a daring adventure after all. There are times he does so to put him off his length, maybe to negate the turn or even just to keep him guessing. There seemed to be no fathomable reason though why Faf du Plessis thought it wise to leave his crease to R Ashwin off just the third delivery he had faced in his innings. But he still did it.

Abraham de Villiers’ 38th fifty in Tests is his fourth vs India. In India, his record is quite impressive – his tally being 536 in eleven innings at an average of 53.60, including a hundred and three fifties.
Jadeja has the last laugh against AB

His approach against Jadeja was a little different. He mostly stayed inside the line and wasn’t afraid of playing against the turn. When he stepped out, AB ensured he got to the pitch of the ball. At times he met Jadeja’s deliveries in front of the short-leg fielder. When he went back, he used the whole width of the crease.
AB scored at a faster rate against Jadeja – 28 runs off 36 balls. Against Ashwin, he had 16 off 27. But the left-arm spinner kept on asking some tricky questions. In the end, he had his reward.
