India’s recurve archers will return empty-handed from the 17th Asian Games after the women’s team lost to Japan in the bronze medal playoff by a solitary point in Incheon on Sunday.

The troika of Deepika Kumari, L Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi went down to Japan in a shoot-off after both the team were tied at 217 at the end of regulation sets.

In the shoot-off, the Japanese team edged past the Indians 27-26 to grab the bronze medal.

It was a thoroughly disappointing performance by the recurve archers given that they had won a silver and two bronze medals at the event’s previous edition.

Dipika was, in fact, part of the bronze-winning women’s team of the 2010 Games in Guangzhou.

The performance is in sharp contrast to the brilliant show of the compound archers. The men’s compound team bagged a gold while Abhishek Verma added an individual silver to that.

The women’s compound team fetched a bronze before Trisha Deb also grabbed an individual bronze.
