Binny in for Aaron; team for final two ODIs later

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday deferred the India team selection for the final two ODIs against Sri Lanka.

All-rounder Stuart Binny, however, has been brought in to replace injured Varun Aaron. The latter damaged his right quadriceps during the first ODI in Cuttack and has been advised rest. He’s likely to be fit for the Test series in Australia, starting December 4.

“The meeting was called to pick the squad for the last two ODIs, but the selectors preferred to wait. Eventually, we all felt one game is too short to assess team or individual performance.

Aaron’s replacement had to be named, so we went ahead with the injury part of the selection. We will name the squad for the last two matches during or after the third ODI,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told The Indian Express on Tuesday.

The cricket board press release says, team selection for the four Tests in Australia has been postponed. In any case, the Test squad was not going to be announced today but the selectors had the opportunity to discuss a probable composition. Now they’ve more time, for the Australian authorities have informed the Indian cricket board that they will expedite the visa process for the cricketers selected for the Test tour.

“We will pick the Test squad on November 9 or 10. It could be on November 11 as well,” said Patel.

Asked if the postponement had anything to do with the November 10 Supreme Court hearing, Patel said: “BCCI’s legal issues are taken care of by its legal department. Selectors have nothing to do with that.”

Incidentally, the Justice Mudgal committee has submitted its final probe report on Indian Premier League betting and spot-fixing to the Supreme Court on Monday. The matter is scheduled to be heard on November 10.
