Back in vogue: Selectors on tour
Should the selectors travel with the Indian cricket team on overseas tours or is their job done once they select the travelling squad of players? In April 2014, when N. Srinivasan was the president of BCCI, it was decided the selectors won’t travel with the team. The current regime wants selectors to be with the team on tours though they won’t have any say in team selections.
BCCI will be sending two national selectors Roger Binny and Vikram Rathour for India’s tour of Bangladesh. Though they won’t have any role in choosing the playing eleven, they can pass on suggestions to the Indian team director Ravi Shastri. “BCCI will send two selectors Vikram and Binny for Bangladesh tour,” BCCI’s secretary Anurag Thakur told The Indian Express. They will travel with the team to Bangladesh for the short tour of one Test and three ODIs. The earlier regime had decided not to send national selectors for away tours as it was deemed their presence wasn’t needed. However, they did send couple of selectors for the 2015 World Cup who however were called back before the tournament got over.
Sandeep Patil, the chairman of selectors, had declined the board’s offer to travel for the World Cup, preferring to watch domestic cricket in India. However, the board is now keen to re-start the old practice.
