20 months after the world body, AIBA, announced that Boxing India would be the new body for the sport in the country and later suspending it, AIBA has now terminated Boxing India’s membership and has directed the AdHoc Committee to organize the elections for a new national federation.
In a communication sent to the committee chairman Kishen Narsi, the AIBA email also stated that any new member federation must apply for membership in accordance to the AIBA statutes and also after conducting fresh elections after the constitution is approved by AIBA.
The recent move has come a month after the Adhoc committee informed the Sports Authority of India (SAI) that the women nationals conducted by Boxing India held in Assam in October are illegal and also informed AIBA about the issue.
“AIBA president DR CK Wu after consultation with AIBA Executive Committee Bureau has excluded Boxing India from its membership and has now directed the Adhoc committee to organise elections for the new national federation for the sport in India. Since September this year, when AIBA suspended Boxing India, the different stakeholders have organised the unrecognized nationals for women and this was not in accordance with AIBA rules,” said Kishen Narsi, chairman of the Adhoc committee while talking with The Indian Express.
Meanwhile, some of the 18 Boxing India executive council members , who also organised the women nationals in Assam in October early this year, also showed their consent to the latest decision and said they are willing to talk with other stakeholders in the coming months.
“We welcome AIBA’s decision. The state units will meet and decide what works for the new body. We are happy that the elections will be held for the new body,” said Rakesh Thakran, secretary general of Haryana Amateur Boxing Association.
