At 28 years old, Gonzalo Higuain is at his peak. So far this season the Argentinian has managed to find the back of the net 20 times in as many appearances in the Italian League.
In all competitions he has scored 23 goals in 25 games, making him the leading goal scorer in all top five of Europe’s Leagues. It truly is a staggering achievement that he has managed so far as Antonio Angelillo back in the 1950’s was the last person to be as prolific.
Record-breaking season
If Higuain manages to continue at the same rate, he will easily pass the 30 goal mark. The only player to make it in over 30 years in Serie A, is Luca Toni. The current record for goals scored in one season in the Italian League is 36.
It would be worth finding the best bets to put money on him breaking the record. That total was set nearly 90 years ago by Gino Rosetti.
Over the last calendar year, Higuain has managed to score 12 braces and has managed five goals in the last seven appearances in the league. The Argentinian international has also managed to match Diego Maradona’s goalscoring record of getting a goal in eight consecutive games.
Form propels Napoli to the top
Thanks to Higuain goals, Napoli are sitting at the top of Serie A. It has been a long time since they have been in with a real shout for winning the title.
The last time they achieved such a feat was back in 1990 when Maradona inspired them to be crowned champions. They are now one of the Free Bets’ favourites to be crowned champions this season and a lot is down to the form of Higuain.
Interest from Europe’s elite
Higuain’s form this season has attracted the interest of the biggest clubs in Europe. It is believed that both Bayern Munich and Chelsea are interested in securing his signature.
Napoli will demand a huge fee for the striker if they do let him leave as they value him at around 100M Euro.
Currently, Bayern is the Free Bets’ favourites to sign him with Chelsea in second place. A lot will depend on which team is willing to spend the most so you can not rule the Blues out of the race.
Stiff competition if he were to move to Bayern
If the player does move to Bayern Munich, he will face stiff competition from current forward, Robert Lewandowski. The Polish international was recently asked in an interview if he was worried about Higuain joining.
The striker claims he was not at all concerned about the possibility of him joining because he was convinced of his talents. The player should be confident as well as he has managed 15 goals this season in 16 matches in the league.
A scary proposition
If the German giants were to sign him, playing both players up front would be a scary proposition for the opposing team. With both of them in the same side, they would be the best bet for the Champions League next season.
