While Pune and Rajkot were building from scratch, six other franchises only needed touch ups to their existing squads.
Here’s who they went chasing.

Royal Challengers Bangalore
They wanted someone up the order who could bat and bowl and was tough to smack. So Shane Watson was picked for 9.5 crore. Explosive would be an understatement for their batting No 1 to 5 – Gayle, Watson, Kohli, ABD, Sarfaraz. Stuart Binny lent the much-demanded local flavour to Mallya’s franchise, while Praveen Dubey was fished out of the Karnataka Premier League and drafted into the Bengaluru franchise.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
The missing Indian link was complete with Yuvraj Singh for a mammoth 7 crore. He also fits into the left-handed fetish that the Hyderabad franchise seems to nurse. Ashish Nehra’s 5.5 crore-worth utility wont hurt. Barinder Sran was a good catch at 1.2 crore. Another left-armer. Team ought to be renamed Southpaws Hyderabad. There’s Mustafizur Rahman as well to give Bangladesh its only IPL star and a new team to follow.

Delhi Daredevils
Inexplicable while they were rebuilding but Sanju Samson (their first bid of the day for 4.2 crore) joined Sam Billings, Quinton de Kock and Rishabh Pant to crowd four glovemen into the team. Chris Morris, the death bowler specialist, earned almost 15 times his base price for a rags-to-riches-to-obscene paycheque story.

Mumbai Indians
One insane century’s enough to get the Mumbai paltans interested, and after Corey Anderson and Richard Levi, there’s the England finisher Jos Butler (who hammered a 46-ball-ton) who’s gone to the west coast for 3.8 crore. He’s supposed to be the backup overseas batsman, backup for Pollard, we reckon. That apart there are the two Pandya brothers.
Kolkata Knight Riders
With the fastest T20 fifty of all time in 14 balls, Munro adds firepower to KKR. The international picks also had Jason Holder and John Hastings fetched up as a finisher for Australia to celebrate being picked by SRK’s franchise. Gambhir brought Manan Sharma with him from Delhi.
Kings XI Punjab
They let go off George Bailey but have Marcus Stoinis for their regular Australian fix, and Kyle Abbot the dependable restrictive bowler. But the heartening picks are Arman Jaffer for 10 lakh and mystery spinner KC Cariappa.
