Mumbai were in a spot of bother at 23/2 in the Ranji Trophy final against Saurashtra in Pune on Thursday. Bhavin Thakkar had just departed and both the openers for the 40-time champions were inside the pavillion in under 7 overs. Shreyas Iyer was already in the middle, after just three balls, and found Suryakumar Yadav’s company to make sure Mumbai don’t falter early the way Saurashtra did in their first innings.

From then on, the duo didn’t deflect from their primary target – reaching Saurashtra’s first innings score of 335. Iyer brought up his 50 from 66 balls to give Mumbai some breathing room. And soon enough, he reached his fourth hundred of the season after chopping Chirag Jani and picking up a single.

His hundred arrived from 115 balls which was laced with 13 boundaries and two sixes.

With his fourth century of the Ranji Trophy season, and sixth overall, he matched and created new records. Most importantly, he is inching towards the top record in the domestic competition. Iyer eventually departed at 117 from 142 balls with 15 fours and two sixes.

This was his 11th 50+ score this season in the competition.

For his crucial and courageous inning, he drew some much deserved praise from people in Indian cricket.
