West Indies missed the bus for ICC Champions Trophy, the only tournament where they have excelled in recent years. The memories of Courtney Brown and Ian Bradshaw combining to snatch a thriller against England in The Oval final in 2004 remain fresh.

West Indies sprung a surprise in the 2004 edition, but they stamped their class over the popularly known as ‘Mini World Cup’ after they reached the final in 2006, in India. Another surprise at a different ICC tournament – World T20 2012, Sri Lanka – followed but consistent results remained a far cry.

The Carribean nation has been struggling to compete with the best, and even the worst, in the game at the moment.

A 4-1 series defeat in South Africa was followed by mediocre outing at the World Cup. There too the Carrebians lost to Ireland. A quarter-final loss to New Zealand was always on the cards. West Indies managed to level series against England but only to be clean sweeped by Australia.

Coach questions, sacked

Wednesday’s low came on the back of sacking of the national team coach Phil Simmons who was sacked as he questioned the national selectors.

“The disappointing fact is that you can lose 3-2 in a vote-off but there is too much interference from outside in the selection of the ODI squad and it’s disappointing for me to know that in any aspect of life (people would use) their position to get people into a squad for in this case, get people left out of a squad,” he had said. Within 48 hours he recieved his termaination letter.

India tour, worst low

The cricket scenario in the country reached the worst low ever after the Dwayne Bravo-led unit abandoned their India tour, midway. Bravo, the captain, faced the music for the action and was dropped from the squad. Pollard followed.

Little did the selectors thought that the replacements weren’t quite ready and they were only digging a deeper hole by axing senior players and ignoring veterans.
