“Attack is the best form of defence” is a popular saying and playing his final Test, Brendon McCullum decided to abide by it.
Languishing at 32/3 against Australia in Christchurch, Kiwis were looking at another embarrassing showing – much like the first Test. That’s when ‘Baz’ decided to turn the game around – or at least hope to.
What ensued next was carnage of the Australian bowling and records being broken along the way.
Finding support from Corey Anderson at the other end, McCullum went about and smashed 145 runs from 79 balls and set three records in the process.

McCullum reached his century in only 54 balls – the least in Test history. He left behind Viv Richards and Misbah-Ul-Haq (56) in the process.

A total of 34 players have ended their careers with a ton. He joins the illustrious company of the likes of Vijay Merchant, Barry Richards, Greg Chappell, Mohammad Azharuddin, Saeed Anwar and Jacque Kallis.
Speaking later, he said, “We decided our best form of defence was attack. On that wicket, any ball could have had your name on it”
