Mobot to Nobot: Farah withdraws from Games

England’s double Olympic and world champion Mo Farah has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games due to fitness concerns, his team announced on Thursday. The 5,000 and 10,000 metres Olympic and world champion was recently laid low by illness and has decided to pull out of the Glasgow event in order to work on his fitness ahead of next month’s European Championships in Zurich.


“I have tken the tough decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games,” Farah, 31, said in a statement released by Team England. “I really wanted to add the Commonwealth titles to my Olympic and World Championships, but the event is coming a few weeks too soon for me as my body is telling me it’s not ready to race yet. Best wishes to my fellow athletes in Glasgow.”


Last CWG for Bindra


Glasgow: India’s lone individual gold medallist in Olympics, Abhinav Bindra today said the ongoing edition will be his last Commonwealth Games. “Tom I will compete in my 5 th cwg. This will be my last appearance at the games Hope to have some fun. Cont,” Bindra tweeted a day ahead of beginning his campaign in the 20th Games.


Though the 31-year-old has in his trophy cabinet the ultimate prize, he has so far failed to win anindividual gold medal in his pet event (10m air rifle) in Commonwealth Games. He, however, had won the pairs gold in Manchester (2002), Melbourne (2006) and in front of the home crowd in New Delhi fours years ago.(PTI)
