Pune franchise gets first pick at Indian Soccer League draft

Team Pune will have the first go at the player drafts for the Indian Super League (ISL) that will take in Mumbai on Tuesday.

A total of 84 players will be a part of the draft — 27 attackers (forwards and wingers), 21 midfielders, 26 defenders and 10 goalkeepers. The pool also includes 30 players on loan from four I-League clubs, as well as free agents who have been centrally contracted.

On Monday, the ISL conducted a club sequence selection to decide the order of drafting players to a team. The sequence selection was done by Jefferson Slack, vice president of IMG’s global business development (football), through a draw of lots and it was decided that Team Pune will have the first call followed by Mumbai.

Two franchises — North East United and Team Goa — are likely to remain passive spectators during the player drafts. The two teams, which are co-owned by I-League clubs Shillong Lajong and Dempo, respectively, have decided to retain their own club players.

Continuity, connect

“We have done that to ensure there is some sort of continuity and connect between the two teams. Shillong Lajong players will benefit a lot playing alongside some of the really nice international players,” North East United and Shillong Lajong co-owner Larsing Ming said.

North East United have also signed former Spain international Joan Capdevila as their marquee player, becoming the second Spaniard after Atletico Kolkata signed former Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia earlier this month for the three-month tournament, which kicks off in September.

The drafts for foreign players will be held early next month.
