Saturday will be the biggest clash of the tournament when the Trans-Tasman rivals, Australia and New Zealand take on each other. The co-hosts will also be fighting for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in the encounter.

But for one man, Saturday’s match will mean much more as he enters a select band of cricketers. Luke Ronchi, New Zealand’s wicket-keeper, is already the ninth cricketer in the world (see list below) to have represented two countries in ODI cricket. He played for Australia in four ODIs in 2008, before he moved onto New Zealand in 2012 and started representing the Black Caps from 2013. As a Black Cap, Ronchi has played against Australia once at the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 scoring 14 as an opener at Birmingham.

When play begins on Saturday, Ronchi will become the third cricketer, from that list of nine, ever to play in a World Cup match against his former team. The first two to do so are Kepler Wessels and Ed Joyce.

Former South Africa captain Wessels, who also played for Australia, was the first cricketer to play against his former team in a World Cup. Wessels led South Africa for the first-time ever, in the 1992 World Cup, in their opening encounter against Australia at Sydney. Ireland batsman Joyce’s record is quite unique. He has been on both sides of the fence as he represented England against Ireland at the 2007 World Cup and then at the 2011 World Cup reversed roles.

England ODI captain Eoin Morgan played for Ireland against his current team in the 2007 World Cup. But in the 2011 World Cup, Morgan was on the bench when England played Ireland. Pace bowler Boyd Rankin represented Ireland against his future team, England, at both the 2007 and 2011 World Cups, before he switched roles in 2012. Rankin however has been dropped from the England set-up since the disastrous 2013-14 Ashes series.

West Indies seam bowler Anderson Cummins played the 1992 World Cup and then returned in 2007 to represent Canada at the 2007 tournament. But in 2007, Cummins did not get to play his former team. All-rounder Dougie Brown represented England in ODIs in 1997-98. He however, played the World Cup only once, for Scotland during the 2007 edition.

The only two cricketers to never represent either of their sides at a World Cup are former West Indies batsman Clayton Lambert and England’s wicket-keeper batsman Geraint Jones. Lambert never represented West Indies at World Cups, but played for United States of America at the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy. Similarly, Jones played for England from 2004-2006 and then played for Papua New Guinea in 2014, but could not help his side qualify for the current edition of the World Cup.
