Delhi U-23 coach appointment a messy affair
The appointment of the Delhi Under-23 coach for the season has turned into a bone of contention with the executive committee members of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) stating that they were not consulted on the issue.
On Monday, DDCA president Sneh Bansal named Ajay Verma as coach and Varun Kumar as assistant coach of the Under-23 team for the 2015-16 season.
“The decision to appoint Verma and Kumar was taken by the sports committee and hence I issued the letter. I don’t see any reason why the appointment of these two cricketers as coach and assistant coach should become an issue,” Bansal said.
However, DDCA’s vice-president Chetan Chauhan said that the twin appointments were ‘unauthorised’ as the association’s executive committee was not aware of the decision.
“Any decision taken by the DDCA has to be passed by the executive committee. The appointment of the coach and the assistant coach was taken without the knowledge of the executive committee.
“This decision has been made in an arbitrary manner and the president of the DDCA cannot clear such appointments without it being table at the executive committee,” Chauhan said.
Incidentally, on October 1, Bansal had issued a letter stating that Guru Satkar had been appointed coach of the Under-23 team. “Initially the sports committee had appointed Satkar. But now Satkar is no longer coach as Verma and Kumar have been appointed,” Bansal said.
Dahiya to replace Jadeja?
Meanwhile, Delhi coach Ajay Jadeja is yet to officially communicate to the DDCA about his decision to resign while Vijay Dahiya, who is tipped to take his place, is yet to receive communication about his appointment. This is the state of the Delhi Ranji Trophy team led by Gautam Gambhir just two days ahead of their second round game against Vidarbha.
“Ajay Jadeja has not contacted us nor have we been able to get in touch with him. Till he gets in touch with us, we do not even know what he intends to do. We need to decide quickly. This is not a great situation with Delhi playing their next Ranji Trophy match from Thursday,” Chauhan said.
However, it is learnt that Dahiya is set to be appointed coach and the former wicket-keeper batsman is only waiting for an appointment letter from the DDCA.
