Saturday saw Tottenham come from behind to beat Arsenal in the North-London derby as Everton and Liverpool drew a blank in the 224th Merseyside derby.

Harry Kane starred once again as a brilliant second half brace secured an important victory for a Spurs side that have leapfrogged Arsenal in the league table to move closer to a Champions League place.

Tottenham were by far the better team and thoroughly deserved to topple the Gunners for the first time in four meetings. Pochettino’s players are finally starting to display an understanding of his tactics on the pitch after a successful run of fixates that has seen them lose only two of the last fifteen games.

In Harry Kane, the North-London side have an all round striker, which was perfectly illustrated by the quality of his two goals. He is the perfect lone forward as he is brilliant at holding up the ball and bringing others into the game; and can finish too. He has all the attributes to mould into a world-class forward and must be called up for international duty for the Euro qualifier and friendly against Lithuania and Italy next month.

In Steven Gerrard’s final derby appearance the Reds will feel aggrieved to have not taken all 3 points from the game as they were in control of the game from start to finish.

Liverpool had 17 attempts at goal in comparison to Everton’s 6 as Brendan Rodgers opted to hand a surprise start to young winger Jordan Ibe. Ibe, who started only his second game for the Anfield club, surprised everybody with his quickness and direct play. He was unpredictable throughout the contest and was unlucky to not get on the scoresheet when a 25-yard pile driver in the first half lashed off the crossbar.

It was evident that Roberto Martinez set his team up to not lose the tie as the Toffees managed a paltry shot on target. Seamus Coleman had the best opportunity late in the second half as he was put through on goal. Unfortunately for the Irish international, his strike was palmed away goalkeeper Simon Mignolet; who, after being heavily criticized earlier in the season, has shown a marked improvement in recent form. He has shown a much stronger command of his area in recent game and has not conceded a Premier League goal in over 360 minutes for his club.

For Liverpool this would have felt as a lost opportunity to make up ground on the teams in front of them. While Roberto Martinez and his Everton side will try and gain some sort of momentum from this result.
