The Union sports ministry has written a letter to the Delhi government asking it to take “appropriate action” following allegations of irregularities in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

Delhi government sources said the letter was sent to the government after MP and former cricketer Kirti Azad raised the issue in Parliament in June.

In the letter sent to the chief secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi, the sports ministry has also sent extracts of the Lok Sabha debate on June 5 that contained allegations of irregularities committed by the DDCA like illegal construction of corporate boxes on land allotted solely for the purpose of promoting sports, evasion of entertainment tax and opening of the bar on dry days like Gandhi Jayanti, sources said.

Former cricketers including India ex-captain Bishan Singh Bedi, member of 1983 World Cup winning team Madan Lal and former Delhi skippers Surinder Khanna and Akash Lal met chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday.

The delegation, sources said, requested the chief minister to appoint a commission to probe into the alleged irregularities. According to sources, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Vigilance will look into the case papers and accordingly decide what action can be taken. So far, the government has taken no decision in the case.

The matter was referred to the sports ministry by the ministry of home affairs following which it wrote to the Delhi government, sources said.
