Statistical highlights at the end of the third day’s play in the third cricket Test between India and Sri lanka, in Colombo on Sunday.

# Sri Lanka have lost their six wickets for 47 runs – the last instance when India had captured the first five wickets for less than 50 was in 2007 when Bangladesh were 40 for five during their first innings total of 118 at Dhaka.

# Kusal Perera’s 55 is the highest score and the first fifty by a Sri Lankan wicketkeeper on Test debut vs India.

# Two Sri Lankan wicketkeepers have registered hundreds on Test debut – 201 not out by Brendon Kuruppu vs New Zealand at Colombo (CCC) in 1987 and 132 not out by Romesh Kaluwitharana vs Australia at Colombo (SSC) in 1992.

# Rangana Herath (49) has registered his second highest score in Tests behind the 80 not out off 93 balls vs India at Galle in July 2010.

# Ishant Sharma (5/54) has set an Indian record for the best bowling figures at Colombo (SSC), surpassing Anil Kumble’s figures of 5 for 87 in 1993. These two are only instances of five-wicket hauls by Indian bowlers at this venue.

# Ishant’s aforesaid figures are the best by an Indian pacer in a Test innings in Sri Lanka, eclipsing the 5 for 72 by Venkatesh Prasad at Kandy in 2001.

# Apart from Ishant and Prasad, only two other Indian pacers have captured five wickets in an innings in Sri Lanka – 5 for 114 by Javagal Srinath at Galle in 2001 and 5 for 118 by Chetan Sharma at Colombo (PSS) in 1985.

# Ishant’s first five-wicket haul vs Sri Lanka is his seventh in Tests – his sixth away from home.

# Perera and Herath put on 79 for the seventh wicket – the second highest for Sri Lanka vs India at Colombo (SSC) next only to 194 (unbroken) between Samaraweera and Tillakaratne in 2001.

# Cheteshwar Pujara (145) has become the fourth Indian player to carry bat through a completed Test innings. The first three were Sunil Gavaskar (127 vs Pakistan at Faisalabad in 1982-83; Virender Sehwag (201 vs Sri Lanka at Galle in 2008) and Rahul Dravid (146 vs England at The Oval 2011) were the first three.

# Pujara’s first duck vs Sri Lanka in the second innings is his second in Tests – his first being vs England at Manchester in 2014.

# Pujara’s 145 not out is the highest by an Indian opener in a Test innings at Colombo (SSC), surpassing the 143 by Sadagoppan Ramesh in 1999.

# Pujara is the second Indian batsman to record a century and a duck in the same Test match vs Sri Lanka – Virender Sehwag being the first 109 & 0 at Colombo (PSS) in 2010.

# For the third time in Tests, Rahul has recorded single-digit scores in both innings of a Test match – 3 & 1 vs Australia at Melbourne in December 2014; 7 & 5 vs Sri Lanka at Galle and 2 & 2 at Colombo (SSC).

# In three successive innings, Rahul has been dismissed on 2 – second innings of Colombo (PSS) and 2 & 2 at Colombo (SSC). In seven of his ten innings played till date, he has been dismissed seven times on single-digit scores.

# So far average runs scored by opening partnerships in the series is 6.36 – 70 runs in eleven innings – the second lowest in a series with atleast 10 innings. The 1895-96 series between England and South Africa witnessed 61 runs in ten innings at an average of 6.10.

# For India, three openers – Shikhar Dhawan, Lokesh Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara have registered hundreds in the series – the fifth such instance for a team in the history of Test cricket.
