Sri Lanka dominate Day 1 with Dimuth Karunaratne ton against West Indies

Opener Dimuth Karunaratne scored an unbeaten century as Sri Lanka reached 250-2 at stumps on the opening day of the first Test against the West Indies on Wednesday.

Karunaratne, who shared an unbroken 149 runs for the third wicket with Dinesh Chandimal, made 135 not out for his third test century in his 22nd game facing 288 deliveries, hitting a six and 10 boundaries.

Chandimal brought up his ninth Test half century and remained unbeaten on 72 at close. He faced 146 balls, hit a six and six boundaries.

Their partnership came off 49 overs after Lahiru Thirimanne was dismissed for 16, caught by substitute fielder Rajendra Chandrika off leg spinner Devendra Bishoo with the total on 101.

Earlier in the first session, fast bowler Kemar Roach had opener Kaushal Silva caught behind by Denesh Ramdin for 17.

Roach had 1-33 for the West Indies.

The West Indies chose four pace bowlers in Roach, Jerome Taylor, captain Jason Holder and Shannon Gabriel. They also picked one spinner in Bishoo, although the Galle wicket traditionally favors spin.
