Mandeep Singh struck his ninth first-class century and added 178 runs with veteran keeper-batsman Uday Kaul (92 batting) as Punjab scored 235 for two against Railways on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy group league encounter.

Mandeep scored an even 100 off 196 balls with 14 boundaries. Kaul’s innings was a dogged effort as he hit only nine boundaries en route his 245-ball unbeaten vigil.

Pathan, Bhatt spin TN out for 125

Yusuf Pathan and Bhargav Bhatt grabbed four wickets each with their spin bowling as Baroda shot out Tamil Nadu for a meagre 125 in their first innings on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group B cricket league match.

Pathan (4/29) and Bhatt (4/32) exploited the slow-turning pitch at the M A Chidambaram Stadium as Tamil Nadu batsmen fell to their guiles.

Off-spinner Pathan’s figures were striking as he bowled 10.4 overs on the trot from the pavilion end for his four wickets while his ally Bhatt, a left-arm spinner, scalped two wickets each in his as many spells.

Bhui, Kaif hit half-centuries as Andhra reach 170/2

Ricky Bhui and skipper Mohammad Kaif scored a half-century each to take Andhra to 170 for two against Mumbai on the first day of their opening Ranji Trophy Group B cricket match.

Bhui (91 not out) and Kaif (66 not out) put on an unbroken 152-run stand for the third wicket to consolidate the home team’s innings after they were struggling on 18 for two at one stage.

Shaukat unbeaten 110 takes UP to strong position

Nineteen-year-old opener Almas Shaukat struck a century on his first-class debut to take Uttar Pradesh to 260 for 2 against Madhya Pradesh on day one of their Group B Ranji Trophy cricket match.

Shaukat received ample support from his opening partner Tanmay Srivastava, as the pair added 125 inside 44 overs in their first innings.

While Srivastava eventually fell for 75, Shaukat remained unbeaten on 110, with 17 fours and one six from 274 balls, after the home side elected to bat at the Teerthanker Mahaveer University Ground.

Brief Scores: Uttar Pradesh 1st Innings: 260 for 2 in 90 overs (Almas Shaukat 110 batting, Tanmay Srivastava 75).
