ED expected to detain, question former IPL chief
Lalit Modi is expected to be detained and questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials as soon as he enters the country. A top ED official told The Indian Express on Wednesday that Modi, because of the charges of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations against him, has still got his name on a Blue Corner notice “He will be detained and questioned and if it is established that he has broken laws, further action can be taken,” top ED official said.
Mehmood Abdi, the general counsel and constituted attorney of Modi, when asked if the former IPL chief would risk being questioned by ED, said: “Modi will abide by the law and will allow the law to take its due course.”
Modi, meanwhile, tweeted, “I want to thank u from the bottom of my heart for standing by me. Some of u had doubts. But today I stand vindicated. It’s been a long tough path for me and my family. The 4 years 3 months and 14 days it’s taken me to clear my name has not been easy.”
An official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, which issued a life ban on Modi last year, said that Modi’s return wouldn’t change the BCCI power equation since the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) was suspended. Modi became the RCA president without coming to India after court order alllowed him to contest the cricket unit’s election.
However, Abdi said that Modi’s ‘personal presence’ would change the dynamics within the BCCI. “Today’s judgment has made it clear that nobody is above the law. Administrative high-handedness has been set aside,” Abdi said. “The return of Lalit Modi is going to impact the cricket scene hugely, particularly the internal dynamics of the BCCI.”
