Football, TT and basketball might fail to make Asiad cut

Football, basketball, table tennis and handball are the four major disciplines that might end up getting scratched when the Sports Ministry, after studying the Sports Authority of India recommendation, sits to prune the Indian Olympic Association recommended 942-strong jumbo Asian Games list.

Other sports expected to miss the cut are baseball, bowling, fencing, karate, modern penthalon, rugby, softball, soft tennis and triathlon. SAI’s bases it’s weeding process on the medal potential of the each sports.

The cricket event at Asiad will also see no Indian representation after the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) decided not to field the team for the September 19-October 4 tournament.

In another development, SAI expressed its inability to enforce the code of conduct on the IOA officials and the support staff who will accompany the athletes to Incheon. At a press meet, SAI director general Jiji Thomson, said ultimately it was the federation’s responsibility to act against the erring officials.

“There is only so much we can do. I personally struck off a wrestling coach’s name from the Commonwealth Games list, but he went there on his own expenses. So it is up to the federations to see to that these things don’t happen,” he said. This question came up in wake of IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta and wrestling referee Virender Malik arrest, and subsequent dropping of charges, during the Glasgow Games last month.
