The week in EPL: Jose Mourinho’s special touch and Tottenham Hotspur’s surge
With the second round of fixtures now complete, indianexpress.com takes a look at three major talking points from the weekend:-
Mourinho’s Chelsea cut above rest
The summer acquisitions, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, have already begun repaying the transfer fee splashed out by Mourinho this summer.
The ex-Atletico Madrid frontman has scored 2 in 2 and is looking like he might finally be the answer to Chelsea’s striker woes. He has been quick to pounce on any mistakes in the opposition’s box and is a player perfectly suited for the Premier League with his strength and hold-up play being fundamental to his style of play.
Fabregas, earmarked as the new Xavi at Barcelona, has become the unlikely successor to Frank Lampard at Chelsea. He has seamlessly slotted into the role of creator-in-chief of this vibrant, fluid setup, and will without question be their most influential player if they are to go on to win the league. He combines his polished artistry with consummate efficiency and has struck an almost instant telepathic connection with teammate André Schürrle.
Mourinho’s teams are always built around a strong defensive. With the impressive Thibaut Courtois keeping Petr Cech out of the team, Chelsea have found a first-rate keeper for years to come. Their current back four are already looking as though they are the most difficult unit to break down in the league once again.
Pochettino gives Tottenham a dynamic brush
The 4-0 drubbing of QPR on Saturday revealed that Tottenham will be a more cohesive unit this time around. Pochettino is an effervescent manager who is not afraid to take risks, something he has proven during his time at Southampton.
After experiencing a full Premier League season, ‘the Gareth Bale replacements’ are finally starting to show their class under a manager who allows his players the freedom to express themselves on the field.
The new system has clearly benefited midfielder Erik Lamela, who is finally producing performances that earned him many admirers at Roma. Deploying him in a central position is certainly bringing out the best of the Argentine trickster.
Nacer Chadli managed to bag a brace in this game and is also looking much more assured in possession. Eric Dier has settled into the Premier League with ease and is already looking like one of the bargains of the summer after moving from Sporting Lisbon for only £4 million.
With Pochettino at the helm, the White Hart Lane faithful are assured to see quick, incising football this season. The 48-pass goal, where all eleven players managed at least one touch on the ball, for Chadli’s second is testament to that.
Stevan Jovetic arrives
Jovetic was omnipresent in Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Liverpool at Etihad. He scored a brace in the comprehensive win.
Unable to play much football after an injury-ravaged season last year, Jovetic is finally showing the faith that Manuel Pellegrini has put in him. Pellegrini has always stated that his team requires four quality strikers to compete, and in Jovetic, Dzeko, Aguero and Negredo, City surely boast the most potent strike-force in the league.
