Denmark defender Daniel Agger has left Liverpool after more than eight years to return to former club Brondby.

Agger played 232 games for Liverpool since joining from Brondby in January 2006.

The 29-year-old Agger says “the opportunity arose for me to return home to Brondby and at this stage of my career it felt like the right decision for me. I wouldn’t leave here to go anywhere else.”

Agger lost his place in Liverpool’s team in its two years under manager Brendan Rodgers, with Dejan Lovren, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho preferred.

Rodgers says Saturday “when we had the privilege to play Brondby in pre-season, we saw the esteem he is held in and I can understand why he would want to return there.”

Liverpool didn’t disclose the fee received.
